The Rough Guide to Vietnam (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

The Rough Guide to Vietnam (Rough Guide Travel Guides) Review

I was in Vietnam (January / February 2008) and I took with Lonely Planet and Rough Guide, and the best of the two leaders is a thin margin, Lonely Planet.

However, there is much to praise, Rough Guide to Vietnam. Is worth buying just for the section about the history, religion (13 pages) and the whole culture of Vietnam. Excellent.

This guide is well spent, to break the Vietnam into eight sections. Each section has a page that shows the place to be.Each section begins with an excellent history and explanation of the area. Rough Guide is an excellent selection of restaurants and bars (better than Lonely Planet) with attractive write-ups that tell you to try something "Indian government bo, a salad, stir-fried banana flower, star fruit and pineapple," or "tries to beef with lemongrass followed by appetizers of fried scallops and then Baba - Grandma soup sweet coconut." This guide is a better selection of nightclubs and pubs, such as Lonely Planetand eight (8) pages to examine the books recommended - Super.

HOWEVER, Rough Guides has carte little, and those who are not acting as good or easy to use Lonely Planet. He has a lengthy "code of price" for the hospitality, ie 1 = below $ 10, 2 = $ 10-15, 3 = $ 15-30, etc., so you have to realize what the numbers represent, or flip out and down the legend. Dove, Lonely Planet shows the cost in U.S. dollars. What an idea! Duh. FewAccommodation (very few) sites that are. Accommodation websites in the world today are a must. All experienced travelers today want to "see" what looks like a hotel or hostel. No restaurants RG breakdown of costs (expensive, moderate, etc.), nor does it mean nothing to you a wide price range ($ 10-15, etc.). Not good.

In short, it is the better of the two Lonely Planet guides, especially if you visit in Vietnam and want to leave the zone "tourist". However, if you stay inHCMC, Hanoi and other big cities and in the best clubs and restaurants with good local descriptions, then this is your guide. Encouraged. 4 stars.
